After a break of over three years, the London Australian Film Festival returned to London screens with a taste of the latest and greatest cinema that Australia has to offer. In early November for a week of screenings and events we returned to the wonderful surrounds of the Regent Street Cinema, and hopped across Covent Garden to our new partner venue, The Garden Cinema.
The centrepiece of the 2022 festival was our tribute to a true legend of Australian cinema, Yolŋu actor and dancer David Gulpilil. Presented in association with the Menzies Australia Institute (King’s College London), we kicked off our Gulpilil season with an Opening Gala screening of Molly Reynolds’ remarkable documentary portrait, MY NAME IS GULPILIL (2021) at Regent Street Cinema on November 5.
The celebration of Gulpilil’s life and work continued at The Garden Cinema (November 8-10), with an illustrated talk opening a series of retrospective screenings that included a programme of rare short films, as well as four features (THE LAST WAVE, THE TRACKER, GOLDSTONE, CHARLIE’S COUNTRY) that highlight Gulpilil’s singular screen presence.
The 2022 London Australian Film Festival concluded with two special events. On November 12 at The Garden Cinema, a special collection of recent Australian shorts from our partners at Australian Short Film Today is followed by a very special 25th Anniversary screening of legendary Australian comedy, THE CASTLE.
On November 13, the festival’s Closing Gala continued our tradition of presenting the work of debut feature filmmakers, with a screening of Renèe Webster’s hilarious new comedy, HOW TO PLEASE A WOMAN, followed by a live Q&A with the film’s star, Sally Phillips (BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY, SMACK THE PONY), and producer Judi Levine (THE SESSIONS, FALLING FOR FIGARO).
