The London Australian Film Festival returns to Regent Street Cinema, with an Opening Gala screening of the remarkable documentary, MY NAME IS GULPILIL (2021), presented in association with the Menzies Australia Institute. This London theatrical premiere kicks off the festival’s retrospective dedicated to a true legend of Australian cinema, YolÅ‹u actor and dancer David Gulpilil, who died in 2021.
Gulpilil is a true screen icon, whose mesmerising, electrifying presence changed Australian screen culture forever. From his breakthrough in Walkabout (1971), to roles in blockbusters like Crocodile Dundee (1986) and Australia (2008), and helping to invigorate Indigenous storytelling in the 21st century, Gulpilil is known throughout the world for his unforgettable performances, culminating in his Cannes Best Actor award winning role in Charlie’s Country (2013).
Despite battling terminal cancer, My Name is Gulpilil sees the Indigenous screen legend sit down in front of the camera one last time to tell his story in his own words. Generous, moving, and life-affirming, the film guides us through a most extraordinary, culture-clashing life and career. But always at its heart is Gulpilil, the consummate storyteller, relating perhaps his most important story, his own.
This Opening Gala event will feature an exclusive pre-recorded introduction from the film’s director, and long-term Gulpilil collaborator, Molly Reynolds as well as a pre-recorded Q&A after the film.
Australian snacks will be on sale
